Laikipia 3D Update - Results

Rift Valley Adventures Kenya MTB 2009 Series Race 3: Laikipia 3D
12-14th June 2009
East Africa’s first 3 day MTB stage race

The Laikipia 3D roared into existence with a great field of cyclists avid for adventure and wilderness. We certainly got it!

The 11th of June saw over 70 people converge on the relaxed race village at Ol Gaboli Lodge, Laikipia for a race briefing and pasta dinner around the campfire ready for the action tomorrow. Riders were briefed that due to a massive increase in local elephant population that single track riding would be dangerous and down right silly and the route would be in open areas. We want to live to tell the tale of our riding adventures.

Day 1:

52.5km After the blessing from the Il Motiok elders wishing us a safe ride and no elephant confrontations the riders bunched together for a small neutral zone to the first lugga. A few crashes later the pack spread out quickly with the top ten riders bunched together. The route had plenty of sand patches and the deceiving climb of 16km to Kimanjo had everyone working hard and always keeping a watchful eye out for elephant. With Kinjah and Kamau setting the early pace Aliko and Nganga were pushed hard to keep up. After another 15km and over undulating hills with views to Kijabe Group Ranch and Conservation area the Highlands water stop was well attended. Heading back to the Ewaso Nyiro River on the downhill run was fast and great fun, and whilst the wildlife behaved themselves a herd of elephants strayed onto the course and were quickly moved on. Kinjah and Kamau were separated by 4 seconds at the finish withNganga and Aliko not far behind. Antonia Elwes powered into first leaving many of the men behind her. She was followed in by Joyce Nyaruri and Kim Greene. The Vets saw Jesper Uganda lead the day, with Nesbitt and Viljoen behind.

Day 2:

73km The lions and hyena kept a few awake at Ol Gaboli but most riders enjoyed a well deserved sleep after either converting to Stans Tubeless Systems or putting more Stans in their tyres. This is seriously thorny country. An early morning start and fresh cool air, Mt. Kenya as a backdrop, views forever over northern Kenya and a big climb, this was the day to make your mark whether just finishing or break into the top ten. With another out and back loop via North Kenya and many rocky lugga crossings this was always going to be huge day in the saddle. Enjoyed by all riders, the first water point with spectacular views across to Ololokwe and the Mathews range was manned by the Naibunga Conervancy scouts, who were our marshals for the 3 days, and once again did a great job handing out the Highlands water. The spectacular scenery was a bonus for Mark and Colleen Le Roux from Big Shot Media, Cape Town, who filmed the entire race and we look forward to their production and Supersport coverage. Kamau punctured early and the lead pack shot off up the demanding climb to Kijabe group ranch. Once again Kinjah crossed in first place 2:35:50 with Nganga and Aliko hot on his heels. Viljoen improved to first in the Veterans, Tom Boo one second behind and Jesper in third. Antonia proved her dominance in the ladies winning in 3:15:55.

Day 3:

42km A short loop crossing the Ewaso Nyiro River, onto Mpala Ranch and back through Tumaren Ranch was fast to say the least. After 6km a screaming, hand waving marshal told the field many elephants were on the course so take care! Everyone did and there was a close call for Kinjah and Kamau having to slow down and narrowly missing a herd. With the excitement behind us and another river crossing to navigate the chance of seeing wildlife on Tumaren Ranch was high and the Naibunga Conservancy Scouts did a great job of securing the course. After 3 days Kinjah held onto his first place in a total time of 5:48:35, with Simon Nganga in second, Paul Aliko third and Kamau in fourth. Antonia was well ahead of Joyce Nyaruri to take the Women’s title in 7:29:35 and Kim Greene in third. Peter Viljoen fought back well to take the Veterans section (6:23:00), with Tom Boo putting in two great final days in second and Jesper Uganda filling out the podium.

Without a great amount of assistance from our sponsors and supporters the Laikipia 3D would never have got off the ground.Thank you to Il Motiok Group Ranch, Kijabe Group Ranch, Naibunga Conservancy Scouts, Northern Rangelands Trust, Highlands Water, Hardi Kenya, Lobelia Farms, DHL, Laikipia Wildlife Forum and all the crew from Rift Valley Adventures. Special thanks to our course director, Albert Muchemi, who worked tirelessly, and with many changes, to clearly mark out a safe and challenging route each day.

RVA MTB 2 2009; Series Results

Who would have guessed after Race 2 that Kinjah and Kamau would not be in the top 3! It shows consistency and good bike preparation pays off as Samson Gichuru leads with 32 points from Katerpillar. It’s good to see a few new names in the points standings and I am sure that Kinjah and Kamau will be back with a strong showing in Race 3. It was great to see Joyce Nyaruri back from a long absence and move up to second place, behind Kim Greene, proving again that consistency pays off. 2008 Champion Antonia Elwes is back in form in equal third with Barbara Payne. No surprises in the Veterans, 2008 Champion Peter Viljoen leading from Jason Potter and Tom Boo. The Juniors category is taking off with regular competitors Ed Cunningham and Balint Miano battling it out for top spot with only two points separating them and in third is the girls leader Talesh Nannes.

Rift Valley Adventures 2009 Series Open

Position, Name, Race 1, Race 2, Total

RVA MTB 2 2009; To Hell and Back Race Report

“Great”, “awesome”, “brilliant”, “challenging”, “fun”, “spot on”, “bastard course”, “I hate Hobleys”, “I hate Nick” and “wicked” were some of the comments used at the finish line for Race 2: To Hell and Back. We can easily say that the 108 registered entrants (67 for the 45km race and 41 for the 25km) had a thrilling ride, through awesome terrain, passing wildlife in dry, dusty conditions and spectacular surroundings. Thank you to all the cyclists and supporters who came for the second race of the season; 108 entrants is great turn-out and once again firmly puts mountain biking on the Kenyan sports scene. Albert Muchemi, Chief of Course, and his Rift Valley Adventures team produced two quality routes in trying conditions, which were extremely well marked and manned; thank you Albert.

Thanks also to Fisherman’s Camp for hosting us in their great campsite on Lake Naivasha and to KWS for allowing us to race through Hell’s Gate N.P. With David Kinjah still not back from the Cape Epic in South Africa and Davidson Kamau keen to take this advantage, it was always going to be a big race. After a delay getting everyone through the KWS desk to settle their park fees the 45 and 25km events started out from Fisherman’s Camp at 9.00am with a 3.3km neutral zone (non competitive) along Moi South Lake road before racing commenced on the turning to the park gate. 100 riders bunched together is a ormidable sight and turned heads of all the spectators en route! Kamau quickly pushed the pace from cruising to redline in a matter of seconds and the race was on. With riders trying to get to the front and stay out of the dust, the pace over the first 2km was simply lung-bursting. I am sure as each race goes by everyone gets faster and faster. Approaching Fischer’s Tower the front group of the 45km event included Kamau, Aliko,Njenga, Gichuru, Nganga, Viljoen, Miller, Muite, Katerpillar and Peter Kamau. On the Twiga loop, riders started to spread out and Davidson Kamau punctured early ruining his chances of a win and 20,000 shillings in prize money. The main body of the field were cycling hard as the dusty, volcanic drifts had everyone in trouble early and the pace slowed dramatically. Passing by the ‘main wall’ towering 200m above the riders, Aliko, Njenga and Gichuru had made a decisive break with Viljoen pushing to stay with them. Joyce Nyaruri was keeping her healthy lead of 4 minutes over Antonia Elwes in the Ladies. The short, sharp 15% incline below the water point certainly sorted all the riders out. At the top of the hill the fresh water from Highlands was a welcome relief in overcast and increasingly humid conditions. After a quick tarmac section past the geothermal plants, Hobleys Volcano (or ‘Bloody Hobleys Volcano’ as it is now known) presented an extremely tough climb for all riders followed by a slippery descent onto single track and then out through Ol Karia gate. North Kenya Gazelles’ Paul Aliko was still in front as he entered the final run back to Fisherman’s Camp and deservedly finished in first place with a time of 1.34.50. An outstanding effort since he was on a borrowed Trek bike that he had never ridden before. John Njenga was a minute behind in second and consistent Samson Gichuru in third. Joyce Nyaruri kept her 4-minute lead over Antonia, with Kimberley Green third in the Ladies section. Peter Viljoen in a time of 1.42.13 was first in the Veterans with Tom Boo riding well into second place and Eric Nesbitt in third. Kunal Parbat continues to improve and was first in the 45km Juniors. We should note that Katerpillar is under 18 but races in the Open category.

The 25km race was hotly contested and Mike Brewin finished first overall and in the Veterans; great ride Mike. First in the Open section was Nadi Omar Hashim followed by Michael Mwaura and Muiti. Jolanda Witteveen did brilliantly to edge out Heleen Weelvart and Connie Cain in the Ladies event. Consistent Cliff Brown and Sandor Frigyik were second and third respectively in the Veterans and a big congratulations to Tony Payne who was eighth overall and first in the Grand Masters (70+).

The Juniors race is getting more and more competitive with Trevor Nannes narrowly winning from Ed Cunningham and Talash Nannes third and also first in the Girls. To all parents and schools, we encourage teams to enter, and can help with getting teams racing; please contact us.

Our new race category: ‘The fastest riders over 100m’, were not the likes of Paul Aliko, Njenga or Gichuru in fact it was Ben Clay and Steve McClean. Ok, they were helped along by an 800kg charging buffalo near the Ol Karia gate, but none-the-less an impressive effort. Well done guys you pick a six-pack of beer each and a roll of toilet paper.

All in all ‘Race 2: To Hell and Back’ was a great success, on course the sight of dads, mums and kids riding together epitomizes the Rift Valley Adventures MTB Series, that it is for everyone. Ride, race or cruise, come out and enjoy the Kenyan outdoors. Thanks again to everyone involved and mark the dates off in your calendar for Race 3: The Laikipia 3D, 12-14th June.
