Laikipia Camel Trek
A camel trek allows you to see amazing places as the camels carry
all of our camping gear and supplies enabling you to travel in style
in stunning country. We walk and the camels carry everything, though
we do have one or two riding camels should you need them. The distance
covered each day depends on where we will camp, the terrain and
the camels, but it is usually between 8-20kms. To participate you
don't have to be an amazing athlete, all you need in determination
and a love of the outdoors.
This is fully hosted camel trek, Rift Valley Adventures staff
and the Samburu camel handlers are committed to ensuring that you
enjoy your safari in comfort and safety. They are all experts in
the bush and will proudly show you everything of interest.
Day 1: To Nairobi
Day 2: Nairobi to Kijabe Group Ranch
We meet you off your flight from at JKI Airport, Nairobi, for a
transfer to Kijabe Group Ranch, Laikipia. The journey travels through
local Kikuyu farmland before circling the base of Mt. Kenya, complete
with equatorial glaciers. From Nanyuki it is a two hour drive to
Kijabe Group Ranch for a night stay before heading off on the camel
trek.
Day 3 to 6: Kijabe Group Ranch to Kipsing Valley
Waking up early in the cool of the morning we begin our camel trek.
We spend most of the morning walking with the camels before the
heat of the day kicks in. This is also when animals are most active
and it is possible to see elephant, giraffe, kudu, impala, masses
of birds and other game. After selecting our camping site around
midday the camels are set free to graze and we put up our camp before
a hearty lunch. We often sleep on a mattress under a mosquito net
where the stars peel out before your eyes. The afternoon is yours
to explore, learn some bush skills, track animals, make a spear
or just relax and listen to the sounds of the wilderness.
Day 7: Camel trek to Tassia Community Lodge,
Lekurruki Group Ranch.
Tassia Lodge is a community owned eco-lodge, run and hosted by the
Mukogodo Maasai and owned and managed by the Lekurruki Community
Conservation Group Ranch. The lodge looks over the northern frontier
district towards Samburu, Shaba and the sacred Lolokwe mountain,
sprawling gently over a rocky bluff that protrudes from the Mukogodo
escarpment. The valley is full of Loimugi trees, a favourite food
for the elephants that visit the area.
Tassia is booked on an exclusive use basis where you will be the
only guests. A comfortable sitting and dining area overlooks the
stunning swimming pool that is built into rocks where extraordinary
shaped fig trees adorn the cliff edge. Accommodation is in triples
and a bunkhouse, all with ensuite bathrooms.
Day 8: Relax at Tassia
You may spend the day as you wish; relaxing at the lodge, a game
drive or a walk in the forests full of butterflies, birds, rare
plants and animals of all descriptions. Tassia is an eco-friendly
lodge; water is gravity fed from a spring, electricity is from solar
panels, and hot water from paraffin heaters. At Lekurruki, while
traditional land use is maintained, the introduction of income from
tourism means that the dependence of the Maasai on livestock will
be reduced. Profits from the lodge are divided amongst the local
community and will help to support the local people, schools, water
supplies and other group ranch operations. Wildlife is rapidly returning
to the area.
Day 9: Tassia Lodge to Nairobi.
A drive back through Lewa Wildlife Conservancy where you can see
all of the big game, and onto Nairobi in time for your flight.
Day 10: Arrive Home
