Gap Year - 11 week Australia challenge

Australia is enormous. It is a culturally and geographically diverse continent that has everything for a fun and adventurous gap-year challenge.

From the dreamtime traditions of the Aboriginals, to coral reefs, pristine deserted beaches, old growth forests, snowy high plains and the wide open space of the outback, Australia is an exciting destination.

For our Rift Valley Adventure gap-year challenge we focus on Western Australia, a massive country-state in itself. We will visit the cosmopolitan city of Perth, travel to South West and Margaret River, Ningaloo Reef and the outback.
The South West with its surf, beaches &

• Old growth forests & unique wildlife.
• Surfing, caving and climbing.
Ningaloo Reef & Cape Range National Park
• Coral, surf, snorkel, sea kayak, fish, climb.
• Trek, cave, aboriginal culture and art.
• Whale sharks and rugged interior of the cape make make this area a great adventure destination.

1. Introduction/Orientation – 1 week
An important week that will help you learn about Aboriginal lore and customs, Aussie slang and a good understanding of everything Australian. The introduction week takes place in the sunny city of Perth, where we have access to the some of the best beaches anywhere in the world.

• Aboriginal language and customs lessons
• Do’s and don’ts of Australia
• Values, traditions and tribes
• Safety
• Weekend surfing adventure
• Wilderness 1st Aid

2. Conservation & Community Project – 4 weeks
Want to make a difference to someone, someplace, somewhere in the world? Are you interested in conserving the natural environment? You and your team will help to provide invaluable skills to our many different research and conservation programmes. You could be involved in:
• Ongoing small marsupial monitoring programmes
• Tree planting in old growth forests
• Conserving limestone cave ecology
• Construction of buildings in beautiful, remote locations

3. Adventure Expeditions – 6 weeks
Throughout our gap-year challenge many memorable adventures will take place. You will get the chance to lead the group at various stages of the journey, helping consolidate those valuable life skills of leadership, working as a team and communication. Expedition highlights include:

• Rock-climbing and abseiling in Margaret River & Ningaloo Reef
• Mountain bike ride through the South West
• Surfing school at Margaret River
• Sea Kayaking Ningaloo reef
• Outback trek
• Caving at Cape Range N.P.
• Diving on Ningaloo reef
• Swim with Whale Sharks
