Community and Conservation
Programmes
Helping others less fortunate than yourself gives personal reward
and memories that last a lifetime.
- Want to make a difference to someone, somewhere in Africa?
- Are you interested in doing community service and conservation
work?
- Would you like to teach at a local village school?
- Does the prospect of travel and adventure beat in your heart?
- Could you live for a period in places you normally wouldn’t
visit?
These are some of the questions we ask students before embarking
on a life changing experience with Rift Valley Adventures Community
and Conservation Programmes (CCP)
The benefits of participating in CCP are wide ranging, developing
new skills every day while working with people from different cultures.
We offer short, week long
programmes to 4 month projects suitable for Gap Year students. Our CCP have three stages:
1. Orientation
First we familiarise you with the cultures and people in Kenya
today. This gives a background on the history of Kenya and it’s
people, so when you go out to meet and work with local Kenyans
the culture shock is minimised and you can answer who was the
first president of Kenya! We take a look at the political situation
today, learn basic Swahili, the status of conservation projects
and improve our skills in tracking and naming wildlife. The orientation
course is designed to help students gain a useful knowledge of
Kenya and enable them to overcome problems they are bound to
encounter everyday.
2. The Project
Being motivated and full of enthusiasm is the key to helping in
projects. Don’t worry if you think your skills are lacking,
you will become a valuable member of the team and contribute greatly
to the success of the project. After choosing what projects interest
you we begin the real work. Your recently acquired skills are put
to work everyday, interacting with and, in longer programmes living
with local villagers. Projects can be as simple as helping build
or paint a local school, continuing research projects, monitoring
of wildlife, helping agriculturalists sink a well, or helping street
kids less fortunate than yourselves. You won’t be left alone
as you and your team work with a Rift Valley Adventures Project
Manager.
3. Adventure
Depending on the length of your programme this can entail visiting
National Parks to observe wildlife, or traveling by camel, dhow
or raft onwards to the next project. Students get the chance to
lead the group at various stages of the journey, helping consolidate
those valuable life skills of leadership, working with a team and
communication. Whatever you do and wherever you go the adventure
will always be there.
